First Alaska Christmas

The holidays have been so fun here in Alaska! We were blessed with a white wonderland Christmas, including chopping down our first Alaska Christmas tree (a black spruce).


We headed out to the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge a few weeks ago and found the perfect tree. Barron got out there and cut it down with our handsaw, and then we strapped it to the roof of the FJ to get it home. :) 





We made it a date night and headed out for pizza and beer on the way back home.


The moose are coming out more frequently during the winter as they are looking for food. We have a couple of females that hang out around our neighborhood and make it by our house from time to time. They come up really close to the house and even get down on their front legs to get to the grass.






We eventually got the tree set up and decorated. It makes the house smell amazing!!!


We decided to get each other boots, poles, and cross country skis for Christmas! Now, we'll be planning a cross country ski outing SOON! We also gots lots of Christmas cards and gifts from home, too. 


We decided to go Southern for our Christmas Day dinner. So we made Hattie B's-style, Nashville hot chicken, pimento mac and cheese, baked beans, and black eyed pea relish. We treated ourselves to an Alaskan beer, and we even had Goode Co. pecan pie for dessert thanks to my wonderful sister-in-law, Gail, who shipped it to us from Texas! It was quite the feast!




The day after Christmas, we headed out to Ninilchik Beach for a six-mile walk. The sun was out, and the views were spectacular!







It's been a truly awesome first Christmas here! Even though we miss everyone back home, we are having such an amazing time! We're hoping that you had a wonderful Christmas, too!

Upper Winner Creek Trail

Howdy! We're wrapping up summer here - I've only got one week left til school starts back up. So, we're trying to pack in several activities before I have to go back. We went to Girdwood on Saturday to hike the Upper Winner Creek Trail. It starts just behind the ski resort there, Alyeska. It was a total of about eight miles that we were able to hike and enjoy in about four hours. We saw a moose on the way there, hanging out in the swamp area near Copper Landing. It was a sign of things to come later in the day. We learned at the beginning of the trail that it used to be part of the original Iditarod route. Pretty cool! About twenty feet in, we came across a creek with a huge tree fallen right across it. It was the perfect spot for a quick picture. Cheers to 20 Years!

I can NOT believe that we've been married for twenty years (together for twenty-five)! Most of the time it feels like just the other day that we were walking down the aisle. Now, we've been together for over half of our lives. I cannot imagine doing life with anyone else! Here's to many, many more...

Dean Moves to Alaska

My brother-in-law, Dean, decided to make the move to Alaska and be our neighbor in Soldotna. So, he sold his house, packed his stuff, and said goodbye to Houston. Barron and I flew down for a super short visit to Texas before we hit the road with him to make the long drive. This is the little plane we fly in to get from Soldotna to Anchorage - just a 30 minute quick flight. We got to sit right behind the pilot this time. Tuesday, June 18 - Some great friends stopped by the night before we left for one more visit and a beer. Mike and Adam are long time friends who have actually already visited us in Alaska and will now have lodging options the next time they come up. :) Wednesday, June 19 - We headed out from Cypress for the last time with Dean's new Jeep Gladiator and box trailer full of stuff.
