August Outings

We spent time around town in August at new places and events and had some fun!

Saturday, August 6 - Backdoor Lounge
We found an old school bar in Kenai where tons of the locals watch football and hang out. It's a pretty cool old spot.



Sunday, August 7 - Trip in to Anchorage
Then we took a trip in to Anchorage to get some shopping done and used our gift card from the Warriner's. :) The scenery was gorgeous!




Saturday, August 12 – Kenai Peninsula Beer Festival
We decided to head for an evening of beer tasting and food truck dining. It was super fun! They had about twenty different microbreweries from all across the peninsula and the state. We sampled all sorts of delicious beer and some tasty food all while strolling around listening to live music from the stage. They even had a girl who had been on The Voice, but I don’t watch, so I’d never heard of her. J






Monday, August 14 – 18th Wedding Anniversary
On my last day of summer, we went down to Homer to celebrate our anniversary. We went to a cute restaurant called The Little Mermaid. It’s super small, seating only six tables at a time, so you have to have a reservation. But the food is five star, a little adventurous, and extremely fresh, coming from the local fishermen. We had Korean nachos with a quail egg, seared Ahi tuna, and a whole fried Rockfish. We even took a brownie home for dessert. We also went down to the end of the road for pictures of Kachemak Bay. It was a gorgeous day!










We did a couple of hikes too, and I started school. I’ll get some pictures of my room, the school, and the kids soon. It’s been different but a lot of fun!

Upper Winner Creek Trail

Howdy! We're wrapping up summer here - I've only got one week left til school starts back up. So, we're trying to pack in several activities before I have to go back. We went to Girdwood on Saturday to hike the Upper Winner Creek Trail. It starts just behind the ski resort there, Alyeska. It was a total of about eight miles that we were able to hike and enjoy in about four hours. We saw a moose on the way there, hanging out in the swamp area near Copper Landing. It was a sign of things to come later in the day. We learned at the beginning of the trail that it used to be part of the original Iditarod route. Pretty cool! About twenty feet in, we came across a creek with a huge tree fallen right across it. It was the perfect spot for a quick picture. Cheers to 20 Years!

I can NOT believe that we've been married for twenty years (together for twenty-five)! Most of the time it feels like just the other day that we were walking down the aisle. Now, we've been together for over half of our lives. I cannot imagine doing life with anyone else! Here's to many, many more...

Dean Moves to Alaska

My brother-in-law, Dean, decided to make the move to Alaska and be our neighbor in Soldotna. So, he sold his house, packed his stuff, and said goodbye to Houston. Barron and I flew down for a super short visit to Texas before we hit the road with him to make the long drive. This is the little plane we fly in to get from Soldotna to Anchorage - just a 30 minute quick flight. We got to sit right behind the pilot this time. Tuesday, June 18 - Some great friends stopped by the night before we left for one more visit and a beer. Mike and Adam are long time friends who have actually already visited us in Alaska and will now have lodging options the next time they come up. :) Wednesday, June 19 - We headed out from Cypress for the last time with Dean's new Jeep Gladiator and box trailer full of stuff. Our goal for the day was to get to Little Rock, Arkansas, to stop for the night and visit the other Smith brother, Steve, and his family. We had an awesome steak dinne
