Skilak Lookout Trail

Well, I haven’t posted a while. It’s been a little hectic getting my classroom set and getting the school year going. And then Harvey hit, and I was more focused on keeping track of all my family and friends to be posting. We’re keeping everyone in Texas in our thoughts and prayers and hoping that you are all doing well. But, I think it’s time to start sharing our adventures again. So, here goes...


Saturday, July 29, 2017 – We slept in a bit today and decided to enjoy the gorgeous weather with a hike.  But before we got going, Dean saw a caribou and baby in the backyard and the gravel pit behind the neighborhood. 


We chose to head about twenty miles down the road to Sterling and try out the Skilak (SKEE-lak) Lookout Trail. 

It’s a four-mile roundtrip hike that took us about three hours total with a little break at the top. We definitely took our bear spray with us because there were all sorts of thick, tall brush along the way as well as berry bushes. It ended up being a decently traveled trail. We saw a couple of groups of people on the way up and a couple on the way down too. But we still yelled out, “Hey bear!” from time to time to make sure we wouldn’t surprise any. It was a little steep towards the top but was worth it. The views of Skilak Lake and the Kenai (KEE-nie) River feeding into it from above were awesome! We also saw lots of cool trees and flowers along the way. 









Then, when we got back to the house, a momma moose and two babies stopped by the yard while the guys put together a fire.

Dean Moves to Alaska

My brother-in-law, Dean, decided to make the move to Alaska and be our neighbor in Soldotna. So, he sold his house, packed his stuff, and said goodbye to Houston. Barron and I flew down for a super short visit to Texas before we hit the road with him to make the long drive. This is the little plane we fly in to get from Soldotna to Anchorage - just a 30 minute quick flight. We got to sit right behind the pilot this time. Tuesday, June 18 - Some great friends stopped by the night before we left for one more visit and a beer. Mike and Adam are long time friends who have actually already visited us in Alaska and will now have lodging options the next time they come up. :) Wednesday, June 19 - We headed out from Cypress for the last time with Dean's new Jeep Gladiator and box trailer full of stuff. Upper Winner Creek Trail

Howdy! We're wrapping up summer here - I've only got one week left til school starts back up. So, we're trying to pack in several activities before I have to go back. We went to Girdwood on Saturday to hike the Upper Winner Creek Trail. It starts just behind the ski resort there, Alyeska. It was a total of about eight miles that we were able to hike and enjoy in about four hours. We saw a moose on the way there, hanging out in the swamp area near Copper Landing. It was a sign of things to come later in the day. We learned at the beginning of the trail that it used to be part of the original Iditarod route. Pretty cool! About twenty feet in, we came across a creek with a huge tree fallen right across it. It was the perfect spot for a quick picture. Cheers to 20 Years!

I can NOT believe that we've been married for twenty years (together for twenty-five)! Most of the time it feels like just the other day that we were walking down the aisle. Now, we've been together for over half of our lives. I cannot imagine doing life with anyone else! Here's to many, many more...
