Road Trip Day 1 - Texas to Colorado

Okay, here we go - the long awaited, much anticipated blog posts about the road trip to Alaska. Sorry that it's taken so long to get it up and running. We camped out almost every night along the way, and the Internet was just too sketchy and slow to get anything posted. But we took a lot of pictures (through a bug-splattered windshield) and keep track of what we were doing and what we saw along the way. This trip was all about getting to the destination quickly, so we didn't really make a lot of stops. But we discovered all sorts of places that we want to head back to in order to really see everything they have to offer.

Day 1, Saturday, July 15 - we headed out at 4:30 in the morning and drove through to Pueblo, Colorado. Barron drove my FJ with a trailer full of our stuff on the back. My brother-in-law, Dean, drove Barron's Jeep the whole way there with us.

We saw out last Texas sunrise just outside of College Station (fitting for an Aggie) and had our last Texas meal of Whataburger in a Walmart parking lot in Amarillo.

The dogs hung out in the back of the FJ the whole way and were pretty relaxed most of the way. We had lots of stops to let them out and give them a break.

We made good time but ended up arriving at our campsite in Pueblo, Colorado right around sunset. Raton Pass in New Mexico is gorgeous, but we got hung up a bit due to an eighteen-wheeler whose cab was on fire. Nobody was hurt that we could see, but it was wild to see that. It was interesting pitching brand new tents in the dark with two dogs. But we did it! We were super lucky that we ended up next to some super friendly folks from Minnesota. They let us borrow flashlights, a hammer, and even brought over some beer for us to enjoy once we got settled. It was a crazy long day!

Disclaimer – if you’re not from Texas, you can skip this paragraph – okay, y’all, I have to say that I’ve always thanked my lucky stars to be born in what I consider the greatest state in the union. But, once again, I was reminded of what a big, bold, beautiful state we have as we drove across the majority of Texas. If you haven’t taken a trip in Texas lately, you might consider doing it soon. There is so much gorgeous open space and quaint towns and amazing sites in Texas, you really should experience it. I am and always will be a proud Texan.

So, I'll post again about more days as soon as we have time and Internet. :) Take care and Gig'em!
