Upper Winner Creek Trail

Howdy! We're wrapping up summer here - I've only got one week left til school starts back up. So, we're trying to pack in several activities before I have to go back. We went to Girdwood on Saturday to hike the Upper Winner Creek Trail. It starts just behind the ski resort there, Alyeska. It was a total of about eight miles that we were able to hike and enjoy in about four hours. We saw a moose on the way there, hanging out in the swamp area near Copper Landing. It was a sign of things to come later in the day. We learned at the beginning of the trail that it used to be part of the original Iditarod route. Pretty cool! About twenty feet in, we came across a creek with a huge tree fallen right across it. It was the perfect spot for a quick picture. Metro in Alaska...

Hey everybody, Barron and I have been having fun in the sun this summer - hiking, fishing, enjoying concerts in the park and live music around town, farmers and craft markets, visitors, and coming up next weekend the annual peninsula beer festival. We had a surprise visitor a couple of weekends ago - Barron's corps buddy from A&M, Mike Cook, hopped a plane and came up for a visit. Barron and Mike went fishing on the Kenai on Saturday, looking to catch sockeye (red) salmon and trout. They went with a guide on the upper Kenai for an entire afternoon. They each caught a trout and learned a lot about fly fishing. The scenery was awesome! On Sunday, we took Mike hiking off of Skilak Lake Road. We started by taking him out on the Upper Kenai Trail for a short distance, so he could see the Kenai from above. It's a super short hike to get to the outlook, but the view is awesome! Then, we went out on the Skilak Lookout Trail to see Skilak
